Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is an RPG created by LucasArts (derp) and BioWare. I have only played it for the Xbox, so this review will focus on that aspect.

For Character reviews, please see the page entitled "KotOR character reviews".

Prior to purchasing this game, I was not a fan of Star Wars. In fact, I thought it was "lame", unfoundedly, listening to the stereotypes. Whilst in a GameStop for the first time with my mother and little brother, I was at first, excited about getting some new games for our "new" used Xbox, sent to us from California from my aunt. Unfortunately, it seemed like my brother was picking games I had no interest in, while any game I wanted was ignored. I was downright irritated by that point and was glaring at my younger brother when my mom asked me, "What about this one?"

Not even bothering to look at it, I responded with a curt "Sure," and snatched the game from her, feeling victorious, as I had finally been able to make a descision. Had I known the game was a Star Wars game at the time, I doubtless would have rejected it. Thank God I didn't.

For the next two weeks, I had no desire to play our newly-gained Xbox, thinking there were no ganes I'd like. I saw my brother playing KotOR and something abiut it seemed different than other games. I watched for a little bit. The next day, I played it.

Needless to say, I was hooked.

KotOR takes place in the year 3986 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin), and takes place above the Outer Rim world of Taris on the Republic battleship, the Endar Spire. The introduction to the game, following quite nicely the pattern of the movies, trails across a background of empty space and reads as follows:

"A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…

Four thousand years before the rise of the Galactic Empire, the Republic verges on collapse. DARTH MALAK, last surviving apprentice of the Dark Lord Revan, has unleashed an invincible Sith armada against an unsuspecting galaxy.

Crushing all resistance, Malak's war of conquest has left the Jedi Order scattered and vulnerable as countless Knights fall in battle, and many more awear alleigance to the new Sith Master.

In the skies above the Outer Rim world of Taris, a Jedi battle fleet engages the forces of Darth Malak in a desperate effort to halt the Sith's galactic domination. …"

This, as it is intended to, developes a backstory, introduces a setting, and sets the tone for the rest of the game. As the last of the words fade away into the distance, the view moves in a deliciously cinematic way to the battle just described, then settles on the sleeping face of the Player, whose design, name, stats, and rank are decided prior to starting the game.

It is explained to the character upon awakening that the Endar Spire is under attack by the Sith, and that the Player is to accompany Trask Ulgo to rescue Bastila Shan.

The Endar Spire can be tedious for veteran players, but is vital for newbies as it exppains the controls that will be used throughout the game as you search for Bastila.
